Final:Part 1

  1. I enjoyed that I was free to write about my beliefs in the student success statement. I also like that I got to create goals for my future.
  2. I didn't like typing tutor because I would get frustrated and wanted to push my computer off my desk.
  3. I would suggest having more projects because doing the same thing can be boring.
  4. I gave my 100% in this class.
  5. Lately I haven't been reading my 100+ goals but as soon as finals are over I will read them again.
  6. I am committed to choosing the right. I have tried very hard to do the right thing ever since I started this class.
  7. I will remember all of the fun assignments I got to do.

Student Success Statement: The Ultimate Choice

Of all the choices you will ever make, one choice supersedes all others-the ultimate choice. This one choice will help you to always make correct decisions. This one choice, The Ultimate Choice, is your keystone to being the best student and person you can be. This one choice will forever affect you for good more than any other choice. The Ultimate Choice is:
To be a CTR Person- to always choose the right!

Since the beginning of this school year we were taught to choose the right. We have had several examples of what you have to do to be a ctr person. It used to sound really complicated but now it is simple. You are choosing the right by doing grand things for people but it is the simple things that make us a ctr person. That can be holding a door open for someone or asking if they are feeling okay when they look sad. If you do things like that you will truly be succeeding in life.

Student Success Statement: Alan Stein

"Success is not an accident. Success is actually a choice. Are the habits you have today on par with the dreams you have tomorrow?"
Dreams are not an illusion. You can always achieve them no matter what your obstacle is. You can't wake one day and decide to be good at something. For some people it takes practice but even if you are a natural at something you need practice to perfect your art and be successful. My dream is to be published before I'm 20 years old. I will do this by practicing my writing. I have a journal that I write in almost everyday. I have also signed up for writing workshops this summer. As much as I'd hope that I didn't have to work to get published, I know that it is almost impossible to get published without practicing my art. Like Stephen Curry I will work for my goal everyday until I have reached it.

Student Success Statement: Thomas Carlyle

"A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder."
This statement is saying that a person without a goal has no direction. They will go through life being useless because they can't think of how they would like to shape their future. This is dangerous because how can someone even survive without knowing what they want to do.
This type of goal can be anything, whether it be graduating High school, going to university, or finding a job that doesn't require a college diploma. It is simply impossible to live life without any goals at all.

Student Success Statement: Chinese Proverb

Beautiful Character
"If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world. Conclusion: If there is beauty in character, there will be peace in the world."

The Six Pillars of Character

The six pillars of character are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Trustworthiness is the stated of being trusted. You gain this trust by being honest, reliable, and not cheating.
Respect is more of a series of actions. There are many things you can do to respect others like using good manners and being tolerant of others and their ideas.
Responsibility can be shown in many ways like being self-disciplined or having self-control. Taking the fault when you are the one that is in fault is another way to show responsibilities.
Fairness is very similar to respect. To be fair one must be open-minded as well as not cheat. You must also not take advantage of others.
Caring is the action of showing good emotions to others like being compassionate of expressing gratitude. It also has a lot to do with helping others.
Citizenship is also a very important characteristic. It means to know what is going on in your community and stay informed, as well as respecting authority.
I don't believe you necessarily have to comply with all of these pillars. If you only have 5 of these characteristics it is fine because nobody is perfect.

Student Success Statement: Sophocles

"I would prefer even to fail with honor than win by cheating."

This quote should be very important to everyone specifically because so many people now a days don't care about how they win because winning is all they care about. For example say you're taking the CAHSEE. Someone offers to give you the answers as they see you are struggling. You refuse to accept help because you want to pass the test and know you deserve to graduate high school. You get your scores back and it turns out you need one point to pass. But you feel alright about it. You know you are not at the level to pass but you are willing to study even harder to take this test and pass it. You are diligent toward graduating college.

Student Success Statement: Dennis Prager

"The most important thing you will ever have is good values."
Good values are a mix of everything that makes a person good. So instead of just having one or two of these qualities have them all. Have good values is important because it betters you as a person. You will be more positive and make everyone else around you positive. You will also attract people who also have good values so you'd have more friends with good values. Values are what help us make good decision. Having good values you will decide not to steal or kill or anything of the such. It helps us differentiate right from wrong.

Student Success Statement: Wilford Woodruff

"Nothing is ever gained in doing what's wrong."
This statement tells us that, why do something wrong when you won't get anything good out of it. You do get something out of doing what is wrong but it is never pleasant. Think of karma when you do good things, good things happen. When you do bad things, bad things happen. This is what happens when you make a  decision. You either do something wrong and it blows up in your face or you do something good and you get good back.

Nicest Man in the World

Patrick Morgan, a man who worked at an airport in Florida has been deemed the nicest man in the world. After finding an iPad in a case that was also stuffed with thousands of dollars he returned it to its rightful owner. The owner compensated this man by giving Patrick $60. Instead of keeping this money for himself Patrick gave some money to a homeless woman that he stated to be concerned about and the rest to a coworker who was in need of money. Patrick got satisfaction out of this. He will live on knowing how great he made the day of the person who lost their iPad, the homeless woman, and the coworker in need of money.

Student Success Statement:Dr. Laura Schlessinger

"The reward for doing right is mostly an internal phenomenon: self-respect, dignity (self-worth), integrity, and self-esteem."
This quote is saying that the reward for doing right are more of an emotional thing than a material thing. You can't buy self-respect and dignity. You must earn it just like you would earn the respect of others by showing them how responsible you are. If you see an old lady standing on the bus it's a given that you should stand up and give her your seat. Imagine how better you'll feel once you've done this good deed.

LAUSD: Students

The student portal at lausd.net provides a lot of important information that can be useful to all. There are several links that take you to different websites specifying the requirements for certain colleges. Some links send you to the college board website. It gives you information about the SAT and AP testing. The information provided on lausd.net is very helpful to all students who are looking to graduate and continue to study in a college/university. This will help me in the future when I need more information about college. I plan to use all of these services once I start looking into colleges.

Forgiveness

Eric Smallridge was a drinker. Despite the consequences he drove drunk. One night as he was driving drunk he hit two teenage girls, Megan and Lisa. Both girls died that night. Eric was sent to prison and that was that. Megan's mother said that she had felt as if she had justice, that our country's justice system did them right. He was sent for 22 years. One day Renee, Megan's mother, reached out to Eric. She wanted to forgive him for what he had done. It was like a burden lifted form Eric's shoulders. He wrote back to her and explained how sorry he was for having done what he did. After that he started going to high schools with Renee to explain the dangers of drinking and driving to students. This got his sentence reduced and he was eventually let out early. We learn from this not just that drinking and driving is  a horrible mixture but that forgiveness is always the way to go.

Student Success Statement: Alan Paton

"When a deep injury is done to us, we never recover until we forgive."
This statement is telling us to forgive and forget. Living a life seeking for revenge is no way to live. We must remember that we are all human. We were all created with flaws. Not only should we learn to live with these flaws of ours but we must also learn to accepted peoples flaws. You need to understand why that person made that mistake. We have to be understanding of one another. Before you go off on someone for something they did to you ask yourself, "Why did they do this?" Then ask yourself, "Is this really what they deserve?"

Student Success Statement: Thomas S. Monson

"Dare to stand alone."
So many people now a days are afraid to make their own choices. Out of peer pressure they decide not to do what's right and decide to be a follower. There is a fine line to when you can be a follower. If you are following someone who makes good choices, is studious, and kind then that is amazing. Go ahead and follow all you want. When your friends want you to do something illegal with them or just bad then you shouldn't be friends with those people. They will only lead you to trouble. Besides who likes being a follower anyways. You should be the leader and be the one to stand up and make good choices.

We Need Diverse Books

Diversity in books are very important but some may question it. They may argue that, 'Why do we need if there is [that one obscure character that never acknowledges their ethnicity/sexuality' or 'What's the point if I already read 1 book like that?' For starters you may want to consider what representation means to people. Representation is the act of being described or portraying someone or something. There are a lot of white cis- gender people being represented which is not a bad thing at all, but keep in mind that there are 7.2 billion people on this planet and the country with the largest population is China. Not once last year did I read about a Chinese character. So why is representation important? Well, it gives people a voice. It acknowledges the lives of people who aren't white and cis. When do we start representation in literature? How about we start since the beginning? I would have felt a lot more confident as a child if I had read about a little chubby Mexican girl. I would have thought 'Wow if she can be happy so can I' and instead of wonder why I didn't fit in with today's standard of beauty. Representation doesn't mean representation for only different ethnicities. When I say representation I also say sexually. It is said that children know since childhood that they like either boys or girls (or whoever they may like). This is why it is important to have a character that just like boys. This way children won't feel alone or wonder why they are different. If you are asking yourself why would I want my child to be exposed to this at an early age, then I will be frank and say you are most likely homophobic. It's fine though there is always time to change. To get started with Diverse books you may want to start slow and read Sandra Cisneros's books. The House on Mango Street is a classic. For children she also has Hairs/Pelitos. Sandra uses bilingualism in her books by using both Spanish and English making her books more realistic. However if you don't know Spanish you don't have to worry because she quickly translates whatever she has written.
     32955
David Levithan is also an amazing writer. I particularly like Boy Meets Boy. Its a beautiful novel that truly portrays sexuality and how it is like to be gay, but most importantly doesn't focus on the main character's sexuality. All of his books are always good choices when you want a diverse book.

I speak out for diversity in all literature in hopes of normalizing what is completely natural.

Student Success Statement: Theodore Roosevelt

"In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing."
This quote is pretty self explanatory. It is saying that no matter what we must do the right thing. Regardless of the situation we should never stray from the right path. If you are in a situation where all of your friends are smoking and drinking, you should first of all get new friends, and second of all say no. There should be no question about this. Your friends have already made the wrong decision and it is up to you whether you want to make the wrong decision as well.

Life Planning Progress Post

I have 330 goals. Out of those 330 goals I have achieved 57 goals. I think this is a good number because I went it to this thinking that I wouldn't achieve any goals. I couldn't even imagine having 330 goals. My goals are mostly all the same. Most of them are about meting authors and I had the pleasure of crossing off most of those authors on my list. A lot of them are about foods I went to try and places I would like to visit. I haven't achieved many of those. I have a few goals about the books I would like to read.

Dr. Bob

Dr. Bob, from Albany, New York, provides free health care in his community, which happens to be the worst community in New York. He didn't enter the Medical force for the money, but to helps others. Not only does he diagnose and vaccinate patients for free, but he also pays for their prescriptions at time. He lives off of donations but most of those donations go back to the community. This makes him successful in my opinion, not in riches but in love from the community. He can easily get away with charging his patients a bit or keeping his donations but he doesn't. This makes the people of the community grateful.

Student Success Statement: John Wooden

"Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better and over a period of time you become a lot better."
You can't just expect to become good at something overnight as well as give up because you can't do something as good as someone else. This is why this quote is so inspirational. You have to try things that your are bad at to master them. For a lot of people their talents weren't just in them. It wasn't natural. They had to master it. W e had people on our student success statement before that have stated they were horrible when they first started, but with hard work and a lot of effort and determination they became the best at what they are. Us students can apply this to are school life because many of us fall under pressure. It pushes down on everyone and makes everyone want to give up. The only one of us who eventually become successful are the ones that follow through and attempt to learn new things.

Good Character

At a Western Oregon softball game against Central Washington Sara, a player from Western Oregon, was put up to bat. At this particular game she hit a home run. It was her first home run ever in her softball career. She ran to first base then she was fine. Then suddenly as she was running to second she tore a muscle in her leg making her unable to run. Her coach Pam Knox asked if they could do anything about it but she couldn't. Players Liz and Mallory from the opposing team decided to step up. They asked if they could carry Sara to home base. Although the umpire was confused it was allowed. They carried her to every base all the way to home. Central Oregon won that game. Although Sara was unable to continue playing she was happy she made her first home run with the help of Liz and Mallory.

Student Success Statement: Pam Knox

"It's a great moment when someone has character to step up and do the right thing at the right time."
Imagined being blamed of something you had no part of. As much as you implore the person blaming you to believe that you couldn't have blamed you for that thing, the refuse to listen and are insistent that you are to blame. Then suddenly someone steps up. They explain that they are to blame. There is a sense of relief that comes upon you when someone tells the truth. First of all you might think. 'Thank goodness, I won't be getting in trouble, because the real culprit has stepped up'. What we should be thinking is 'Wow, it must have taken a lot of courage to tell the truth!' If I were in this situation I would firstly thank the person, because were it not for them I would still be getting in trouble.

10 Native American Commandments

  1. Treat the Earth and all the dwells therin with respect.
  2. Remain close to the Great Spirit
  3. Show great respect to your fellow beings.
  4. Work together for the benefit of all mankind.
  5. Give assistance and kindness wherever needed.
  6. Do what you know to be right.
  7. Look after the well being of mind and body.
  8. Dedicate a share of your effort to the greater good.
  9. Be truthful at all times.
  10. Take full responsibilities for your actions.
These Ten Commandments basically say that you have to do what is right, help other, have faith in their deity, be responsible, and be respectful. I already do most of the things. I try to be very kind and respectful to others. I don't like lying and I take responsibility for all my wrong doings. To apply all of these I think I have to think of myself sometimes, because I like helping others but I rarely give any time to myself.

Student Success Statement: Alexander Hamilton

"A promise must never be broken."
This, in a way reminds me of Harry Potter. In the very popular series by JK Rowling there is a type of promise made called an unbreakable promise. Basically if you break this promise you will die. Dying if the promise is broken is a way to encourage that that promise is kept. I don't think there should be any form of encouragement to keep a promise it should just be common sense to keep a promise. For example, if your best friend tells you a secret that won't lead to the harm of herself or anyone else and you promise that  you won't tell it should just be a given that you shouldn't tell. If you tell your mom and you know she won't leak it, it is still not okay. If you break a promise you are breaking trust.

Student Success Statement: Visualization-Imagination

"What you see is what you get."
This quote is saying when you set your goals and actually try to achieve it you will get it. It takes a lot of confidense and imagination to do it because you need to be specific when setting goals. You also have to get out of your comfort zone to truly see those dreams come to life. You can see this a lot of the time in tv shows, movies, and books. For example in Harry Potter, the character Hermione sets out to become the best young witch and she does with a lot of studying and hard work. In the book Love in the Time of Cholera, Florentino vows to love Fermina and Promises that one day they will be married. Although it takes a long time he does end up with her. I would one day like to write novels. I've always seen myself working with books.

Student Success Statement: Henry David Thoreau

"Goodness is the only investment that never fails."
Making an investment with money is a risk. You'll either get rich or die trying. The thing about investments with money is that you don't know if you'll win or lose. When you do good and give back that is an investment that in no way will ever hurt you. If you decide to do a good deed that person will remember the goodness you did for them. They don't have to repay you. They could give back to someone else in need. In that way you will possibly be starting a chain reaction of good deeds and decrease worldsuck.

Student Success Statement: Theodore Hesburgh

"My basic principle is that you don't make decisions because they are easy; you don't make them because they are cheap; you don't make them because they're popular; you make them because they're right"
This quote is basically saying that the only reason we do things is because it is the right thing to do. I believe that in our subconscious mind we do certain things because they are right. It is not until we second guess our decisions that we start to wonder if we will get more popular if we make that decision. We ask ourselves which decision will better advantage us. I do thing people do things for reasons that aren't because it is right. However, I do believe we do do things for selfish purpose even if our first idea was right.

Student Success Statement: Joseph Smith

"It is our duty to concentrate all our influence to make popular that which is sound and good, and unpopular that which is unsound."
This quote means that we have to popularize and normalize things that are good for you and the people around you. Doing good things or actions that you do that aren't selfish are viewed as strange and most people won't do them because they fear ridicule. If we make good deeds popular more people would do good deeds without hesitance.

Student Success Statement: Abraham Lincoln

"I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong."
Abraham Lincoln says in this quote that he will always do what's right and will support anyone who does the same. He will not support liars and cheaters. I do this as well. If I know what my friends are doing is right I will support them 100%. If I know what they are doing is wrong I will try to convince not to do it, and if that doesn't work I will not show my support for that friend. It is because of this that I have lost friends, but it is not much of a loos and more of a gain because I don't like to surround myself with cheaters and liars.

April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day started the same way as most people celebrate this day do now. It was started in April 1, 1700 as an annual celebration to pull practical jokes on their neighbors. It's exact origins remain a mystery. Some think it started in 1582 when France changed their calender. Some ancient societies believed that it started when mother nature would change the climate in April. Now people go to great lengths to prank one another like making fake announcements and announcing fake products that would be really cool if they were real. There have been many hoaxes on April Fool's Day that people do believe. In particular, BBC made people believe that a digital clock was going to be added to Big Ben. Burger King announced a left handed whopper that many customers ended up asking for it. In Switzerland, a news station announced the creation of a spaghetti tree where yo u can grow your own spaghetti at home.

Student Success Statement: Tyler Haws

"I trust that my hard work will pay off."
This quote is great for motivation especially when you know about Tyler's background. Tyler was devastated after being cut off his basketball team and instead of moping around he actually tried to get better and it worked for him. He now plays for BYU. I think that if more people applied this to their lives it wouldn't matter how bad you are at something or if you have natural talent. If you work hard for something anything is possible but if you don't try you are doomed to fail. Working Hard for something also allows risks which come with the best outcomes.

Careers in Publishing

Publishing companies for books provide many career opportunities that range from advertising to editing. All of these people are necessary for selling books. Writers are the most important people in the process of selling a book for obvious reasons, they create them. Advertising copywriters make slogans for books, so the tagline on from covers were written by these people. People with this career need to read the book being published and summarize it in 1 sentence. Advertising media buyers are in charge of paying for billboards and space for online advertisements. Media planners decide where the advertisements should be placed. Commissioning editors create titles of books to ensure profitability. Copy editors edit manuscripts and must pay close attention to details. Basically if a character is wearing a skirt in one page they must ensure that that character is still wearing it on the next page. These are some of the careers that most publishing companies offer.

On My Mind

I am  writer. I like writing about everything, but lately I haven't had the same self-encouragement to write. I love writing and I know I want to writer for a living when I'm older, whether it be obituary's or novels I just enjoy writing. I am terrified that I have lost my muse because whenever I write something I will work on it for maybe an hour until I realize how much I hate what I'm writing. I used to be able to write and love everything about what I write and love it and everyone who reads it loves it but now I can't even show my friends what I write and I have writers block.
Recently I went to a book event where there were panels of authors, publishers, and literary agents. I asked them if I should just give up on writing because I thought it just wasn't for me. They all told me the same thing, I shouldn't give up because everyone at some point thinks that what they're are writing is the most horrible thing in the world and that it should be burned. It takes a strong person to continue working diligently until their manuscript is gold. I believe that I can apply this to everything in life. When something doesn't go your way don't give up because if the person who was twice as deep as you are in self hatred could get out of the hole you can too. All the authors there went through the same experience.
Rachel Hawkins, author of Rebel Belle and Hex Hall, said that all of her books that have been or are going to be published made her feel like she should give up writing and that she was a bad a writer, but she kept on reminding herself that A) she wasn't a bad writer for knowing what she was writing was bad and B) what she was writing was only a first draft and it could only get better. Michelle Hodkin, author of the Mara Dyer trilogy said that her book went through three rewrites until she finally found a good ending.

Student Success Statement: Brigham Young

"True independence and freedom can only exist in what's right."
You will only achieve freedom and independence when you are doing the right thing. For example if you are selling drugs on the street you will never feel free or independent. You will not feel free because you will always be looking behind your back making sure you aren't being followed. You will end up being dependent in the way that you won't know how else to make a living. The same goes for anything bad that you do. This also how you can identify something wrong. St. Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick is patron saint of Ireland who died on March 17. St. Patrick's Day is a feast day. This day is celebrated under Saint Patrick's name because he brought Christianity to the pagan Irish. The color green is largely associated with the holiday because Saint Patrick explained the holy trinity using a shamrock. Drinking also increases on this holiday because the ban against drinking is lifted. Many countries celebrate this just as a celebration rather than a public holiday. It is a public holiday in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and some Canadian provinces.

Student Success Statement: George Chapman

"They're only truly great who are truly good."
This quote tells you that greatness and goodness correspond with one another. You can't have one trait on its own. No matter what if you are not good you will never achieve greatness. If you are good you can reach for the stars. If you are not doing good you can't even reach the door. As long as you are doing good you can do great things.
