Student Success Statement: Ben Carson

A Choice: Poverty or Prosperity
"I hated poverty. Poverty is more of a choice than anything else, and I can change that [poverty]. It depends upon how hard I want to work, and I decided that I would change it."
Ben Carson by Gage Skidmore 2.jpg
I am half and half on this because while I do believe that with hard work and determination can get you out of poverty i don't believe everyone has the choice the to get out of poverty. In some situations people either have to work to make money for their family or abandon them and hope they'll live long enough for them to watch you get rich. In my eyes money is greed but of course if you want to live you need money. Everything is about survival. I for one want to survive. But we have people like Ben who may disagree with me. He was born extremely poor. His mother didn't even know how to read so he may see things differently.

Ben Carson

  • Born in the slums of Detroit, in deep poverty
  • His mother and father divorced
  • His mother came from a family of 24 children
  • His mother couldn't read
  • His mother raised Ben and his brother, Curtis

  • Ben becomes top student in his school
  • Ben becomes a world renowned doctor

Student Success Statement: Thomas S Monson

"You can't be right by doing wrong; you can't be wrong by doing right."
I agree with this statement because as much as you may think you may be doing the right thing if it's wrong it's wrong and vice versa. Chances are if you're questioning your actions you are choosing the wrong.

Student Success Statement: Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

"Enthusiasm makes the difference."
I agree with this statement. If you stay optimistic about anything when it seems that things aren't going your way something good is bound to happiness. Optimism and enthusiasm are the key to happiness. Take for example the time I got a D in one of my classes, I didn't let that bring me down. I knew I could raise that grade and by the end of the year with a combination of enthusiasm And hard work I got a B on my final report card.

"I wasn't trying to leave a legacy. I was trying to do what was right."
I believe this can be very helpful to many people because it is a good way to live. When your main priority in life is winning and being remembered it will effect different parts of your life. When you make your main priority doing the right thing you will live a better life.

Current Event: Obama's Migrant Plan Block

Last year President Barack Obama announced his new immigration reform that would grant temporary relief of deportation to four million undocumented citizens in the US. Then came election day and the results were surprising. Republicans won most of the seats in the House and just by seeing those results most people new what was to come. They plan to pass a bill that will roll back recent immigration reform. Both Congress and Senate are opposing this executive order The president will most likely veto this bill. There are some who fear Obama's end of term seeing as if they apply for relief the government will now where they are and can deport them.
There is an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US so I believe this is crazy. This also hits home because most of my family are immigrants. Also the US has to think about how immigrants can help economically. When you have more legal citizens they must pay taxes. Those taxes go to support this country.
Activists

Student Success Statement: Mario Cuomo

"Every time I've done something that doesn't feel right, it has ended up not being right."
I can relate to this. When I was in middle school I hit someone. At the moment it felt good but soon after I felt a pang of guilt in my stomach and still to this I feel it. I would ask myself, "Did you really want to do that?". I don't feel it as much anymore but when I think about it I do feel guilt. This is why people must think of their actions before doing them.

Student Success Statement: M.L. King Jr.

"Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education."
M. L. King Jr.
This quote is trying to say that just learning isn't education. Without character there is no education. Character is what can make or break an education. If someone is learning hateful things from someone with a bad character they won't be learning anything good. For example, a child with a parent who has a bad character will learn only hateful or bad things as opposed to a child who has parents with good character who will most likely learn good things. Also without good character you will not be open minded and will therefore refuse to learn certain things.

Reflection: This seems like an interesting career that I would like to study but I do not see myself doing this in the future. If anything this would be my back up career.
